Pity Sex – Demo (2011)

As I write this review it is cloudy and cold out. I only mention this because Ann Arbor, Michigan’s Pity Sex have a sound the is very reminiscent of  90′s midwest emo and the cold, dreary days that lead to summer.  Drawing very obvious influences from bands like Jejune, The Promise Ring and Mineral the vocals are slightly off-key and have a few group harmonies that are infectious and uplifting.  Apparently some of the guys in the band used to play in Dire Wolf, a metallic hardcore band (rad, I guess).

If you dig that old midwest sound then check these guys out and support new music. Thanks to Music As Heroin for the heads up on this.

Blew.Me.The.Fuck.Away.

Now, everyone who actually reads this obscure blog knows my feud with post-rock vocals. She’s a heartless devil, stealing many a talented band away from their best sound because she must ruin almost everything she touches. Almost.

The album opens up in a very light and airy way, feeling a lot like Signal Hill. Honestly, they could have made this album just off of the instrumentals alone, but the vocals are really what set this band away from all the others. They’re not used quite as much as other bands (The Appleseed Cast, Butterfly Explosions…etc.) but are used almost as another instrument. It’s a truly beautiful mix and should set at least a little bit of an example to other bands about how vocals should be included into a mainly purely-instrumental genre.

My favorite song off this album was definitely “Our Door Handles Stopped Moving Years Ago”. The violin in it was so gracefully done and the acoustic/group vocal ending of the song seriously gave me goosebumps. Another interesting feature about this band is their use of sound samples that they place seemingly under the music, adding to the feel of whatever song they’re placed in. The layering of sounds during songs like, “The League Will Never Let The Albino Kid Win”, make an interesting combination of vocals on top of music on top of what seems to be people having conversations. Symbolic? I have no idea, but it makes for great music.

Rating: 5/5 Kegs. I try not to be the guy who just gives out 4 or 5 out of 5′s on everything, but this truly is incredible. Good work.

My Iron Lung- No Such Thing (2010)

[Edit #2: I really shit on these guys the first time, and I don't understand why. They are actually pretty talented and deserved a better write-up than they got. Here's their redemption. Or mine.]

Mix with The Used, some early 90′s emo and some hardcore posse vocals and you have My Iron Lung, a four-piece band from San Diego, California. You like emotionally charged lyrics? Here you go. Bitter, violent screaming? Got that too. I can’t exactly pin a genre on these guys, but I guess that’s just another thing that makes this band great.

The lead track really is my favorite. I love the raw energy and the feeling that you get from it. The second track kind of has a Circle Takes The Square sound to it (minus the girl vocals) during the verses, and it’s a nice touch. The only real draw back I see from this album is the clean, whiny chorus in “Where She Left Her Ghost” and sometimes the group vocals get either boring or out of tune. Other than that, these guys have such an incredible sound. Honestly, you can feel the passion that they play with. I feel that the drummer is actually really talented and the vocals besides from that one chorus drive into you, screaming the way you want to scream the last time someone broke your heart or you just felt that everything in your life isn’t going the way you want.

Rating: 3/5 kegs for an emotion-riddled roller coaster. The vocals need to mature a little, but they are really the only thing that takes this band down a small peg. If they toned down the System Of A Down vocals at some points and stuck to the singing/incredible screaming they could make a ground-breaking emo/screamo band.

[Endnote: I spoke to the vocalist about his album after I shit on it, and he said something that really opened my eyes:

At first, [you] might not understand or really feel the emotion that was placed in those songs, but if you listen long enough, you might become more familiar and see what kind of moods and emotions we were trying to [convey].

It was the simple, honest truth. Seriously, check out the album.]

In  2009 Snowing made some big waves with Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit, a look into emotional vomit of a Kinsella inspired band that plays messy, emotionally raw and catchy as fuck songs about your life.

ICDWIWIIW is a strangely intertwined set of 11 tales of drinking too much, angst, and the drifting of friendships, taking unexpected turns. for example in the song Mark Z. Danielewski touches on the songs namesakes Magnum Opus House Of Leaves and Tobais Funke. The structure of the songs manages to capture the frantic feeling of a mind racing with thoughts.

What personally made this album really strike a chord with me, personally was the way these songs manage to convey the hidden feelings that I myself have wrestled with, my feelings of pride, being frustrated with life turned out and still keeping that torch for that one special person burning even though you know its bad.  These guys have managed to capture the frustration of a my peers twenties and put them into a sing along and parts you will scream in your cars.
