Book of Sand: a story by Jorge Luis Borges about a monstrosity that has no beginning or end, a monstrosity that, if burned, could destroy the entire world. Much like the infernal tome, Book Of Sand play Black Metal that is haunting, atmospheric and, at times, disturbing. The album starts out with an ominous, solitary guitar but quickly builds up into a maelstrom of shrieks, rapid picking up, and only builds from there. Cellos swell in and out, and with themes of Anti-nationalist, Anti-racist and pro-VHEMT woven in the lyrics. Face The Waters is meant to be listened to as one piece instead of individual songs, so be patient. This is not your older brothers black metal; in fact, I found it to be more unnerving than their cold, Nordic musical ancestors and a different, yet welcome change in sonic direction then previous releases. Face The Waters is definitely is not for the meek. I am not posting a download link, so head to their bandcamp and pre-order this record already.

LIVE: Deafheaven Vacation Vinyl 03.04.2011
Posted: August 15, 2011 by Is This Revolutionary? in Band, Black Metal, VideoTags: black metal, deafheaven, E.
If you some how have not heard deafheaven, check out this live set shot a few months back at Vacation Vinyl. For those not in the know, Deafheaven are from San Francisco and play some beautiful post-rock influenced black metal. Hints of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Weakling. It is black metal that will make some trve kvlt elite turn their noses and make diehard fans out of others. The current wave of black metal bands from America like Krallice, the late Ludicra and super divisive Liturgy are taking the genre into new territory.
You can stream “Roads To Judah” over at Deathwish and their demo is on bandcamp.

El-Ahrairah – Bathory Tribute (2011)
Posted: April 5, 2011 by Is This Revolutionary? in Black MetalTags: Bathory, black metal, El-Ahrairah, kvlt, tape

El-Ahrairah are a black metal act from Minneapolis Minesota who are really into Watership Down (which rules.) They released a pretty awesome 3 track Bathory tribute tape that is worth listening to. I wouldn’t even bother trying to get a copy, as these kvlt as fvck dudes only made thirteen copies of it. Buzzsaw guitars, grunted vocals and an apocalyptic atmosphere make this worth listening too. I am also honing to post their self titled release which is a lot more raw and atmospheric; along with “Untitled” which is one long, winding track. El-Ahrairah change with each release, and bring more to the table than most BM bands.
Special thanks to Funeral Stench for the heads up on these dudes.

NYC Black Metal act Imperial Triumphant just finished up a video for their single “Stormgod” off of their EP ”Obeisance”, which was produced by Colin Marston of Krallice. The video contains some nudity so it is kinda NSFW.
RIYL: Deathspell Omega, Bathory, naked ladies.

Fuckmorgue – Down Forever (2004)
Posted: January 17, 2011 by Is This Revolutionary? in Album, album stream, Band, Black Metal, hardcore, punkTags: 2004, black metal, Canada, Crust, Fuckmorgue, post-hardcore, Winnepeg

HOLY.SHIT.
Fuckmorgue was a Canadian blackened Crust band that hailed from Winnipeg. Lead by a fierce female vocalist, they create a maelstrom of death obsessed, emotionally charged jams.
“Down Forever” opens up with a strange, twinkling, almost ominous synth that quickly leads into a strange mesh of post-hardcore and occasional blast beats. One of my favorite tracks has to be “Chapters For Coming Forth by Day” , it opens with the quick 3/4 beat that features an organ the sent chills down my spine.
This highly experimental album has quickly grown on me, it is a shame that this was the only release by Fuckmorgue, They really do not have a lot of info available.
“Down Forever” gets a 5 out of 5 for blowing my fucking mind. I highly recommend you give this a listen.

Blue Hummingbird on the Left – Bloodflower
Posted: December 8, 2010 by Is This Revolutionary? in Album, Black MetalTags: black metal, Black Twilight Circle, Blackend Thrash, Blue Hummingbird on the Left

There is nothing like death in war, nothing like the flowery death
so precious to Him who gives life: far off I see it: my heart yearns for it!”
-Mexican War Hymn
The above quote comes from one of the stranger Black Twilight Circle releases this year from a band name Blue Hummingbird on the Left, (which is the translated name of the Aztec god of war Huitzilopochtli.) The “Bloodflower” ep is almost ten minutes of unadulterated old school Black Metal with hints of Thrash, old Bathory and super agro eighties punk.
With lyrics touching on Mexican nationalism (Viva la raza) and the war culture of Huitzilopochtli, this release is one that content wise stands out from he usual pagan influenced metal scene. The 7″ should be available soon via Crepusculo Negro and if you can find this tape then definitely pick it up.
Thanks to The Funeral Stench for the link

Tsjuder “Desert Northern Hell”
Posted: November 23, 2010 by Is This Revolutionary? in Album, Black Metal, ReviewsTags: black metal, Desert Northern Hell, Norwegian black metal, Tsjuder

I am going to get the obvious out-of-the-way, “Desert Northern Hell” is THE definitive Norwegian black metal album, no question about it.
While Tsjuder may not have been (they split up shortly after this record was released) the most original band out there, they made an album that kicks ass. The guitars on this album have some of the best riffs (check out the opening riffs to Possessed and Lord of Swords) and definitely take a page out of older Darkthrone and even some Carpathian Forest.
The tempo changes are well done, going from brutally crushing to thrashy. The drums are primitive and have enough blast beats to satisfy any Marduk fan, and the vocals are just evil and nasty sounding. The songs change in length and structure, so it never sounds stale. one of the strongest tracks has to be Unholy Paragon, It starts out with an eerily quite and haunting guitar riff only to lead into a sonic assault that will leave you with a broken neck. the Bathory cover is worth checking out, but kind takes away from the rest of the album.
Make sure to download this BM masterpiece, I promise old Black Metal fans and newbies will enjoy this.

Blut Aus Nord “What Once Was…Liber 1″
Posted: November 18, 2010 by Is This Revolutionary? in Album, Band, Black Metal, ReviewsTags: black metal, Blut Aus Nord, French Black MEtal, What Once Was: Liber 1

Hailing from Mondeville, Calvados, France, Blut Aus Nord plays black metal by their rules. Shunning the traps most BM bands fall into, they really distance themselves from the corpse paint, burning crosses, satanic themes of their contemporaries and focus on developing their sound from your run of the mill black metal to something more avant-garde, drawing from influences from shoegaze and even some free from.
What Once Was…Liber 1 is less polished than previous albums. What Once was is super dark and foreboding, with fast tremolo picking, blast beats, evil, distorted vocals and a super dark album cover all merge together to form an aggressive, pissed off album. The Vinyl itself is only labeled “side a’ and “side b”
While not BaN strongest release, What Once Was…liber1 is an exercise in pure unadulterated BM, stripped of all preventions and of the typical formula. Pick up a physical copy if you can. you wont be disappointed.

Hex Noir “Demo I” and “Demo II”
Posted: November 1, 2010 by Is This Revolutionary? in Album, ReviewsTags: Bathory, black metal, bone awl, hex noir, invisible oranges, ohio, USBM

hex noir
I was really late with this one, Hex Noir was a raw black metal band hailing from Ohio. The play raw black metal with crust and d-beat influences. While nobody is re-inventing the wheel (or pentagram I guess) they demo while short, is a killer.
The first demo is very, very heavy with the Bathory and Mayhem influence. the drumming is not the best, but at least they are tolerable. The riffs are blistering and catchy and the quality is a little shitty but reminiscent of Bane Awl.
The second demo actually starts out with “Crawl” a short, but dirgery song that was kinda unexpected but awesome non the less. The quality of the second demo is much better and also al lot louder. Demo II is a lot more punky and fast than the first one, with less Bathory style BM.
unfortunately according to their MySpace ”HEX NOIR IS FUCKING DEAD”
